National Microchipping Month 2025: One Year On Why It Still Matters

June marks National Microchipping Month (NMM), and this year we’re reflecting on the real-world impact of microchipping since compulsory cat microchipping became law in England one year ago.

While microchipping may seem like old news, it remains one of the most effective tools in responsible pet keepership and a critical part of reuniting lost pets with their keepers. At PeddyMark, we’re using this month to highlight the ongoing importance of pet identification, the changes in legislation, and the practical support we offer to pet professionals, breeders and keepers across the UK.

Has Compulsory Cat Chipping Made a Difference?

From 10 June 2024, all cats in England have been legally required to be microchipped by 20 weeks of age and registered on a compliant database. This brought cats in line with dogs, who have been covered by similar legislation since 2016.

The initial signs are promising, with more cats chipped than ever before. The legislation may be in place, but many pet keepers are still unaware that a chip without accurate contact details is essentially useless. This is where continued education and proactive support matter most.

Why Microchipping Still Matters

Whether it’s a dog that bolts during fireworks or a cat that strays too far from home, a microchip remains the quickest and most reliable way to return a lost pet to its keeper. Collars can fall off and tags can be removed, but a registered microchip provides a permanent and scannable link back to the rightful keeper.

The key is ensuring those details are kept up to date. At PeddyMark, we work with trusted databases to help reunite pets with their families every day. It’s a reminder that microchipping is not just a box to tick, but an ongoing part of responsible pet care.

The Legal Landscape in 2025

Pet microchipping laws have grown stronger in recent years, and they are being enforced more consistently. By law, all:

  • Dogs must be microchipped by 8 weeks of age
  • Cats must be microchipped by 20 weeks of age
  • All chips must be registered on a compliant database with correct keeper details

If pet keepers are served a notice to comply and fail to act within 21 days, they could face fines of up to £500. As professionals in the industry, it’s vital we help spread the message and offer support where needed.
